This Tampa dock company was founded in 1998 by Joe Steffens with the goal to provide marine construction services to the developing area north of Tampa. Over the years he has grown the business into what it is today, a partner for waterfront residents they can trust will complete the job the right way and at a fair price. Joe has kept strong morals in an industry that is otherwise lacking, always operating by the rules and using high quality materials to ensure his work will stand the test of time. You can drive around most of the lakes in the Keystone / Land O’ Lakes area and see his signs on the docks reading “Steffens Marine Construction”.
After decades of growth under Joe’s leadership, he has decided to retire and hand the company over. To introduce myself, my name is Trey Lomel and I am a Tampa native that has always been drawn to the water. My love and appreciation for docks started at a very young age catching my first fish on my grandparents’ dock at their Ocala lake house. It might’ve only been a CD sized blue gill, but I can ensure you it fought like a tarpon. My grandparents’ dock might’ve been the most simple structure in the world, but it created a passion in me. I knew I wanted to have the same ability to enjoy the waterfront some day and help others realize that same dream. Fast forward to today, I am happily married to a woman that has the same passion for docks. She might have a different use for the waterfront than I do, her mom and her happily referring to themselves as “Dock Fluff”. Roughly defined as; Not contributing to any of the work of catching fish, loading a boat, skiing, or packing the coolers, but instead just sitting pretty and being an ornamental attribute to the dock itself.
Career wise, although I did not begin in construction, I grew up in a family with a long history of woodwork and have built my fair share of buildings, furniture, etc. I also have had a lifelong side hustle of flipping boats, starting from a $200 Jon boat I bought in college to my latest boat I recently sold for $30k. But after graduating Florida State with a Bachelors in Economics and a minor in entrepreneurship, I wanted to learn how businesses were run and how they were acquired. I spent the first 6 years of my career working in finance, specifically in Mergers and Acquisitions. Leading to my goal of acquiring a company. God’s plan worked out in a unique way and I am entrusted with operating Steffens Marine Construction, now Old Florida Docks.
Why Old Florida Docks? My beloved state of Florida has changed a lot since I was a kid. Some of my favorite fishing spots are now home to apartment complexes and housing communities where there were once cypress trees or mangroves. My goal with Old Florida Docks is to maintain the beauty of the natural settings we were blessed with while providing the perfect structure for families to enjoy the water on. Old Florida Docks will keep the same high quality level of service the company always has, the only difference being the name.
Our service area includes South Tampa, Odessa, Land O’ Lakes, Lutz, Carrollwood, and Keystone.
